A snack brand in Japan can actually get penalised if the food inside doesn’t closely match what’s shown on the packaging.

Even a few millimetres of difference can become a problem.

And honestly, I find this fascinating because every country treats packaging very differently.

In India, one of the biggest focuses is MRP visibility.

In parts of Europe, nutritional grading systems like Nutri-Score are heavily regulated.

In the US, brands often get pulled up for misleading quantity claims or oversized packaging. But in Japan, the obsession is accuracy.

The expectation is simple:

If the packet shows it, the customer should receive exactly that.

Which is why many Japanese brands rely on actual product photography and extremely standardised packaging references. And it has real consequences.

Globally, brands have faced lawsuits worth millions over packaging claims:

  • Burger King chains accused of exaggerating burger sizes in ads
  • Subway sued over sandwich measurements
  • Kellogg Company and Mondelēz International questioned over “slack fill” packaging where packs appear fuller than they are.

Because packaging doesn’t just sell products. It sets expectations.

And once consumers feel the actual product is consistently different from what they were shown, trust starts eroding very quickly.

Working in packaging, I’ve realised something over time.

Good packaging is not the one that makes the product look the biggest or the fanciest.

It’s the one where the consumer opens the pack and feels: “Yes, this is exactly what I paid for.” 🙂
