In 30 days, the EU is going to start blocking packaging shipments that are missing one document most buyers have never heard of.

On 12th August, a new EU packaging law came into effect across all 27 member states. It is called PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation). Simply put, it sets strict new rules on what packaging can be made of, what it must declare, and what chemicals it cannot contain.

And it does not care when your packaging was made. If it hits the shelf after 12th August, it has to comply. No exceptions. 2 things change immediately.

Every packaging format needs a signed Declaration of Conformity with technical documentation to back it up.

And food-contact packaging cannot carry PFAS above 25 parts per billion for a single substance, 250 for the combined total. Does not matter when it was made. If it is placed on the market after 12th August, it has to comply.

If you are buying packaging from India, China, the Middle East or anywhere outside the EU, this is directly your problem.

The moment your name goes on that packaging as the importer, you own the compliance. And if something is wrong, the paperwork trail leads straight back to your supplier.

So the next time you speak to your packaging supplier, ask them 3 simple things.

Do you have the Declaration of Conformity ready? Is the packaging PFAS compliant? Is the technical documentation in place?

If the answer is not a clear yes, sort it out now. Not after August.

The buyers who will be fine on the 12th are the ones who asked these questions months ago, before anyone told them to. Make sure you are one of them.
